The longer I stay in Korea the more I continue to realize how much different this country really is. The cultural differences are of course plentiful, but certain aspects of life remain similar no matter what country you live in. I like the fact that even though two different cultures may not have been in direct contact with each other they can still have similar, if not the same, thoughts and beliefs about the society they live in.
I introduced the quote “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” during my teachers training class. It turned out not to be as foreign to them as I had originally imagined. I came to realize that they have “heard” this proverb b4, only to find the wordplay foreign. Meaning, even across continents the meaning behind these words is far reaching. Korea also has a proverb that translates roughly into “everybody sees through different glasses.” Or take for instance the phrase breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There is a saying in Korea that is roughly translated into “Breakfast is king, lunch is queen and dinner is the prince.” My point being no matter how different two cultures may be, in the end it is the human qualities that bind us as one. We all have deep feelings, and we all have to eat to survive even if what we eat is different or what we feel is rooted from somewhere else.
